Last Monday students enrolled in the subject “Integration of renewable energies” visited the wind farm “Les Colladetes”, located in El Perelló. During the visit the students had the opportunity to know the operation of a wind farm and the constituting elements: wind turbines, transformer and interconnection elements of the energy produced to the grid, phases of the park and environmental benefits of wind energy.
Yesterday the students of our master visited the Camp de Tarragona Water Reclamation Plant as part of the subject “Advanced Water Treatment”. This is a pioneer facility that reclaims the effluent from the WWTPs from Vila-Seca&Salou and Tarragona to be used by the chemical industries in the area. The quality of the reclaimed water is suitable enough to be used in the cooling systems of the different industries.
Today the students of the master in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Energy visited the company Goma-Camps, located in La Riba, in the framework of the subject “Environmental and Energy Economics”. Students were introduced into the production of paper tissues, and how the company is increasingly considering the recycling issues and cost savings in both water and energy consumption, while complying with all the environmental regulations and trying to produce in a circular and sustainable way.

DOW TARRAGONA HELD THE FOURTH EDITION OF THE “SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS”
On September 7th, DOW Tarragona held the fourth edition of the “Sustainability Awards”, under the Work Experience project, a collaborative program between the School of Chemical Engineering (ETSEQ) and the chemical company, aimed at students of the Master of Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Production (MEAPS). The winners were Saged Nabil Elghatas, Kamilla Shahhuseynli and Sophia Theresa Walsh for their joint project “The Layered Approach”, based on Circular Economy and the model “Pay As You Go Concept”.
The “Sustainability Awards” are aimed at students of the Master of Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Production (MEAPS). The application is done in teams of two or three members whose aim is to analyze and develop a study on a topic related to Sustainability and proposed by DOW. This year, the topic proposed was: “How Chemical Companies should redefine their role in the next decade to advance the well-being of humanity and to foster a more sustainable planet, while maximizing Economic, Environmental and Societal Value”.
In the award ceremony participated Josep Bonet, Director of the ETSEQ, Sandra Contreras, Coordinator of MEAPS, Oscar Saladié, Director of the DOW/URV Chair of Sustainable Development, Alfred Arias, Innovation Support & Learning Leader in DOW, Ignasi Cañagueral, Responsible Care & Infrastructure Leader in DOW, and Cristina García, Hydrocarbons EH&S Delivery Leader in DOW.

OPEN THE CALL FOR “TEACHING ASSISTANT” GRANTS FOR STUDENTS PRE-ENROLLED IN THE MASTER IN ENVIRONMENTAL AND ENERGY ENGINEERING
This call aims to train students and introduce them to university teaching and/or research activities by involving them in tasks to support the master’s degree teaching staff. Two types of grant are offered: “Talent Assistant” and “Teaching Assistant”. The period for submitting the application ends on the 30th June 2016. Students pre-enrolled in the Master in Environmental and Energy Engineering are eligible for these grants.
THE URV IS THE 83RD BEST UNIVERSITY UNDER 50 YEARS OLD IN THE WORLD ACCORDING TO “TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION”
The 150 under 50 ranking, elaborated by the “Times Higher Education” magazine, has placed the URV in 83rd position in the list of the 150 best universities under fifty years old in the world. This is the third consecutive time that the URV is part of this ranking, which started in 2012.

Last Thursday the students of the master’s programme visited the plant “Ecoparc 2” in the framework of the subject “Generation and minimization of wastes”. The Montcada i Reixac Ecoparc is a facility for the selection and treatment of the municipal waste generated within the Barcelona Metropolitan Area and separated at origin into organic matter, packaging and residual waste.

VISIT TO DOW WATER & PROCESS SOLUTIONS
On Thursday 12th February, students attending the course “Advanced Treatment and Management of Water” visited the facilities of the Global Water Technology Development Center that Dow Water & Process Solutions has in Tarragona. The students visited the pilot plant and laboratory areas, and attended two seminars on the application of ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis technologies.
